Cota 0

Board-marked concrete volumes in raking sunlight, joined by a single orange line painted at exactly the same height on every surface.

What would a construction company look like if it stopped sounding like one?

Concept

Studio concept. Cota 0 is a fictional company invented for this study. It isn't a client, and the imagery was rendered by the studio.

Overview

Cota 0 is an imagined mid-sized builder in Madrid and San Juan. In construction, “cota cero” is the datum: the reference level everything on site is measured from. It's a precise idea that clients of any kind can understand, which makes it a far better brand than a hard hat and a skyline.

Challenge

Construction websites tend to sell the same three things in the same three stock photos. Meanwhile the real anxieties of anyone commissioning a building are simple: Will it finish on time? Will the price hold? Will I know what's going on?

Objectives

  1. +0.00Stand apart from a category that all looks alike
  2. +3.20Make progress and accountability the central message
  3. +6.40Work on a site hoarding as well as on a phone in the sun
Cota 0 printed pieces on a concrete floor: a black site hoarding, an orange poster with a giant zero, section drawings and business cards.

Strategy & direction

One line carries the whole brand. The datum runs across every surface at the same height, as it does on a real site, and everything else hangs from it.

  • The line

A single orange rule, always horizontal, always at the same level within a layout. On site, it's literally painted on the structure.

  • The type

An industrial condensed face set big enough to read from across the street, because much of this identity lives on hoardings.

  • The promise

“Everything is measured from here” turns a technical term into a commitment about transparency.

Design & development

The website below is the actual build: drag the handle to resize it, and watch it reflow like the real thing. Its layout uses container queries, so each component responds to its own space instead of the window, and the datum stays intact at every width.

Outcomes

This is a concept, so there are no results to report. We don't invent numbers. When a commissioned project goes here, you'll see verified outcomes and where they came from.
